Thracian Wines and the City : A Taste of Heritage in New York

The Bulgarian Embassy in New York hosted an incredible event showcasing the rich heritage of Thracian wine and the EU’s PGI and PDO quality labels as part of our EULOVE2 project. Guests were thrilled to experience, for the first time, a diverse selection of indigenous Bulgarian grape varieties. The evening provided a unique opportunity to explore the depth and authenticity of Bulgarian winemaking, leaving attendees impressed by the quality and tradition behind every bottle.

At the exclusive wine-tasting event hosted, guests had the unique opportunity to explore the rich heritage of Thracian wine through an extraordinary selection of indigenous Bulgarian grape varieties.

They discovered the bold and structured Mavrud, renowned for its deep color, rich tannins, and complex flavors of black fruits and spices. The intriguing Rubin, a cross between Nebbiolo and Syrah, impressed with its dark fruit aromas and velvety texture. The rare Broad-Leaved Melnik Vine transported attendees to Southwest Bulgaria, offering elegant notes of tobacco, leather, and dried fruits.

For those preferring lighter styles, Pamid provided an easy-drinking red with fresh fruit flavors, while the aromatic Dimyat delighted white wine lovers with its floral and citrusy freshness. Finally, the unique Red Misket (Misket Cherven) stood out with its delicate balance of floral, fruity, and subtly spicy notes.

This immersive tasting experience allowed guests to rediscover ancient flavors and appreciate the diversity and authenticity of PGI Thracian Lowlands wines.

Guest feedback highlights the captivating allure of indigenous Thracian wine varieties, which offer a unique blend of history, terroir, and tradition unlike any other. Cultivated for centuries in the region’s rich soils and ideal climate, these ancient grapes produce distinct flavors and aromas that set them apart from international varieties. Their authenticity provides wine enthusiasts with a truly exclusive tasting experience. Beyond their remarkable taste, these wines hold deep cultural significance, reflecting Bulgaria’s winemaking heritage and its valuable contribution to the global wine world.
